A Supportive Environment
.
We firmly believe that one of the key hallmarks of John Hampden Grammar School is the atmosphere created by the positive, friendly and supportive ethos. Each individual is respected, we share a concern for each other and we work together as a community. We maintain regular contact with parents through meetings, reports and a monthly newsletter and parental involvement with the school is encouraged. We have an active Parents' Association which arranges successful social events and fundraising activities.
Form tutors are primarily responsible for the progress and well-being of each boy. A Head of Year has oversight of the whole year group and responsible for each Key Stage is a Head of School. The Head of School will closely follow the development of a boy over several years and help to ensure that he is fulfilling his potential. at times in their school career some boys will need additional help. The school has a member of staff specifically responsible for this who will work closely with colleagues to ensure that an appropriate programme of support is developed. Our Matron is a qualified nurse and experienced counsellor who is also fully involved in the welfare of pupils.
Mature self-discipline is expected of boys. On the rare occasions this fails sanctions such as detentions are used - parents are always consulted when boys are experiencing difficulties. Boys are encouraged to take responsibility within the school as prefects or by leading clubs, or House competitions, or other activities.
A well-developed careers programme operates throughout the school and is supported by weekly visits from external specialists. At important crossroads in a boy's development, such as choosing GCSE and A level subjects a more intensive programme is initiated and presentation evenings and interviews are arranged to help guide students and parents. In the Sixth Form the programme focuses on making the right choice for university, higher education or employment. Visits to a major university are arranged and work shadowing is also encouraged.
