Year 7 & Year 8 FA Cup Festival

Win for our Yr 8 team 6 a side tournament
Tuesday 24th April saw the first ever FA Cup Festival sponsored by E.ON with schools from all over England taking part. Berks & Bucks FA held two festivals to celebrate the achievements of those schools who have been awarded Charter Standard status. Over 250 players participated in the festival and the standard of football on show was fantastic. There were five competitions running as part of the memorable day; two for year 5&6 boys, two for year 5&6 girls, and year 7&8 boys. The winners of the two festivals were; (Berks) Harmanswater (5&6 boys), St Francis (5&6 girls) and John Hampden (7&8 boys). (Bucks) Stanton (5&6 girls) Long Meadow (5&6 boys). Congratulations to all that took part and we look forward to making the festival as successful next year. All schools entering the 2008 FA Cup Festival day must be Charter Standard. For more information on the Charter Standard scheme and other FA initiatives, please contact Freya.coombe@berks-bucksfa.com. Go to our photo gallery for a picture of our team.

Young Engineers Royal Navy Challenge

JHGS Team win prizes in three areas
John Hampden Team: Tom Pike, Tayo Webb, Francis Voss, Tom Whale. Runners Up ‘Best Overall Mission Completion’ - £250 + trophy Runners up ‘Best Design and Construction’ - £125 + trophy Runners up ‘Best PowerPoint Presentation’ - £125 + trophy The John Hampden team were one of only 25 from a large entry to qualify for the finals by breaking a coded message and submitting a design drawing for a vehicle to recover a “crashed satellite” on land and deliver it to a rescue vessel at sea. The team had to design and build a radio-controlled model amphibious vehicle which, in the final on 29th March, could navigate through a series of islands then drive out of the water onto land to collect a squash ball. It then had to return to the water to complete the mission. The boys practised on the school pond for several weeks to hone their skills. In the final the vehicle and drivers performed extremely well and were only pipped for the first prize by a few seconds. Pictures can be found in the photo galleries
