The John Hampden team were one of only 25 from a large entry to qualify for the finals by breaking a coded message and submitting a design drawing for a vehicle to recover a “crashed satellite” on land and deliver it to a rescue vessel at sea.
The team had to design and build a radio-controlled model amphibious vehicle which, in the final on 29th March, could navigate through a series of islands then drive out of the water onto land to collect a squash ball. It then had to return to the water to complete the mission.
The boys practised on the school pond for several weeks to hone their skills. In the final the vehicle and drivers performed extremely well and were only pipped for the first prize by a few seconds.
