Australia
In land area, Australia is the sixth largest nation after Russia, Canada, China, the USA and Brazil. It has, however, a relatively small population. Seventy percent live in the 10 largest cities; most is concentrated along the eastern seaboard and south-eastern corner of the country.

Sydney, New South Wales
Sydney has a population of around 4.3 million people and is the capital of New South Wales, a state on the Eastern side of the country. The city is centered around Port Jackson, the main entrance to the Pacific Ocean. It was named by Captain Cook in 1770 after Sir George Jackson, Judge Advocate of the Royal Navy Fleet at the time. The construction project to build the Sydney Harbour Bridge started in 1923, but wasn't formally opened until March 19th 1932.

Perth, Western Australia
Perth has a population of around 1.5 million and is the fourth largest city in Australia. It is on the Western coast, 2575 miles from Sydney. Perth is geographically closer to Easter Timor and Jakarta, Indonesia than it is Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

A quick History lesson
Although the first human habitation of Australia is estimated to have occurred between 42,000 and 48,000 years ago, it was until 1606 that the Dutch charted the whole of the western and Northern coastlines of what they called New Holland. In 1770, James Cook sailed and mapped the east coast of Australia which he named New South Wales and claimed for Great Britain.
